National Sports Day Celebrated at Guru Nanak Dev University

 Amritsar,  August 28 (Bharat Sandesh) – The Department of Physical Education (Teaching) of the Guru Nanak Dev University organized Cross Country Race to celebrate National Sports Day in the University Campus, here today. Apart from students faculty members and non-teaching employees participated.

          Prof. A.S. Brar, Vice-Chancellor of the University flag off cross country race from the University Guest House which leads to Guru Nanak Bhawan Auditorium of the University. Eminent Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Brig. Labh Singh, Prof. M.S. Hundal, Dean, Academic Affairs, Prof. P.K. Sehajpal, Dean, Student Welfare, Dr. Inderjit Singh, Registrar, Dr. Jagjit Kaur, Director, Youth Welfare, Dr. H.S. Randhawa, Deputy Director, Sports, Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Head of Department and Lady Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Saravjit Kaur Brar were also present on this occasion.
          To mark this occasion, a special function was also organized under the chairmanship of Prof. Brar in the Guru Nanak Bhawan Auditorium of the University. Brig. Labh Singh presided over. Dr. Sukhdev Singh welcomed the chief guest and others. Students of Physical Education Department presented Bhangra and Gidha.
          Prof. Brar while congratulating on the eve of National Sports Day said that Guru Nanak Dev University has won the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for a record of 22 times. The award money of Rs. 10 lakh would also be presented to the University by the President for the promotion and development of sports.
He said that in the field of culture, the University also won good positions not only in regional level but at national level also. He said that due to the excellent record of University in the field of research and academics, the university has granted the status of ‘University with Potential for Excellence’. He said that those students who pursue their Ph.D in Physical Education would be encouraged.
He said that scientific techniques and instruments would be used to trained sports personal. He said that University has allotted Rs. Ten Crore budget for the sports development and activities. He exhorted the sports personal to work hard in their fields to excel at international level.
Brig. Labh Singh congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and its team for receiving MAKA Trophy for 22nd time. He appealed the sports personal to play the game with spirit of true sportsmanship. He said that they should follow the great sportsmen of the country to excel in their fields.
Dr. Inderjit Singh and Dr. Saravjit Kaur Brar also presented their views on this occasion. The winner of Cross Country Race were also honored by Vice-Chancellor. In women section, Sonia, Inderjit Kaur and Ramandip Kaur remained first, second & third respectively. Similarly, in Men Section, Gagandeep Singh, Chhatarpal Singh and Malkiat Singh finished First, Second and Third respectively. Apart from Head of Physical Education Department of various colleges, International player and Arjuna Awardee, Balwinder Singh Shammi & Arjuna Awardee, Dr. Suman Sharma were also honored on this occasion.
