Implementation of ban on use of liquor by members of Political parties sought

Amritsar, 21st Jan 2014 (BharatSandesh News):– Dr. Charanjit Singh Gumtala patron, Amritsar Vikas Manch in a personal letter to All India Congress Committee president Mrs Sonia Gandhi, and Punjab state Congress president S. Partap Singh Bajwa and Shromani Akali Dal president S. Sukhbir Singh Badal, has drawn their personal attention to their constitutions submitted to the Election Commission of India and as available on the website of the Commission ,where every member of these parties gives in writing that he or she abstains from alcoholic drinks and intoxicant drugs or does not drink liquor.

According to the Congress constitution, every member gives the following DECLARATION

I declare that –
(i) I am of the age of 18 years and over;
(ii) I am a habitual wearer of certified Khadi;
(iii) I abstain from alcoholic drinks and intoxicant drugs;
(iv) I neither believe in nor practise social discrimination in any shape or form and undertake to work for its removal;
(v) I believe in an integrated society without distinction of religion or caste;
(vi) I undertake to perform minimum tasks including manual labour as may be prescribed by the Working Committee

According to the Shiromani Akali Dal constitution, every member gives the undertaking:

1. Every adult is eligible for enrolment as primary member of the Shiromani Akali Dal after depositing membership fee for a period of three years provided:
a) He/She has faith in the programmes and policies of Shiromani Akali Dal :
b) Does not believe in untouchability &
c) Does not drink liquor.

But it has been seen that most of the members of these main two parties of Punjab use liquor and other alcoholic drinks in violation of their constitutions. Punjab has become a drug state and both these parties are campaigning against drugs. If all the members of these parties stop using alcoholic drinks or liquor, both these parties can become the role models for others and Punjab can become dry state in future like Gujrat where sale of liquor is banned. In these days, use of liquor in marriage parties and in other functions has becomes status symbol.

Founders of the constitutions of these parties were very wise and knew the harmful effects of these intoxicants. Most of other parties include BJP do not have such clause in the constitution.

Only Janta Dal (United) has this clause abstaining members from the use of alcoholic drinks and intoxicant drugs.

The Manch patron has appealed through his letter to the BJP, Aam Admi Party and other major political parties of India to bring such provision in their constitution’s for the interest of the common man.
