Withdraw service tax on money transfer from abroad:Gumtala

Amritsar, 12 Dec 2014 (Bharat Sandesh News):– Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala Patron of Amritsar Vikas Manch has urged the Centre government to withdraw the circular issued by the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), asking banks and financial institutions which levy a fee or commission for facilitating the transfer of money from abroad pay service tax.

In a memorandum to the Prime Minister Mr. Narinder Modi and Punjab Chief minister S.Parkash Singh Badal , manch leader stated that levying service tax will encourage hawala or other illegal activities . NRI would rather keep money with themselves in the foreign banks and when visit India deposit the foreign currency in their NRI Account, if permitted. it is definitely going to hit millions of workers on whose remittance millions back home depend on for living.

The UPA government had issued similar order in 2012. Chief Ministers of Punjab and Kerala met then prime minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh in this regard because these states get the largest remittances. So circular was withdrawn in 2012. According to World Bank data ,India received $64 billion in 2011 from NRI. Mr. Modi promised Achhe din before elections, but he has brought Burre din for NRI
