BADAL HAILS SETTING UP OF BISA AT LUDHIANA

EXPRESSES GRATITUDE TO PM AND UNION AGRICULTURE MINISTER
Chandigarh, October 1: Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today thanked both the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Union Agriculture Minister Mr. Sharad Pawar for establishing the prestigious ‘Borlaug Institute for South Asia’ (BISA) in the state at Ludhiana.

In a statement here, Mr. Badal said that  the Borlaug Institute for South Asia’ allotted to Punjab would go a long way towards the much needed second push for Green Revolution  in the agrarian state where the traditional agriculture had already reached at a point of saturation. Mr. Badal pointed out that the setting up of this prestigious institute would be a real tribute to the Noble laureate and father of the Green Revolution Dr. Norman E. Borlaug who was intimately associated with Punjab especially the Punjab Agricultural University and people of our state still remember him with respect and affection.  Apart from Dr. Borlaug’s affinity to Punjab being at the forefront of food grain production in the country, Mr. Badal said our state rightly deserved this institute in view of its enormous contribution in the National food pool and the establishment of BISA  in Punjab with satellite centers in Bihar and Madhya Pardesh would contribute significantly in improving the agriculture in the country in general and food security in particular. Therefore, the upcoming institute in the memory of Dr. Borlaug to be established at a cost of nearly Rs. 500 crore would be instrumental in giving a boost to the agriculture research and providing our agricultural scientist an opportunity to work with International scientist.

Mr. Badal also hoped that this Institute would also prove to be a mile stone in ushering in an era of diversification of agriculture by encouraging the value added crops like Maize and Oil seeds ultimately helping our farmers to come out of the rut of wheat-paddy cycle.
