Global Hand Washing Day 15th October, 2011 Observed

There are approximately 5000 germs on your hands at any given time.Hand washing with soap could save one millions lives per year.
Unicef on use of Soap Unicef says using soap to wash hands, particularly after contact with excreta, can reduce diarrheal diseases by over 40% and respiratory infections by 30%. The Global Hand washing Day The Global Hand washing Day took place for the first time on October 15, 2008, the date appointed by UN General Assembly in accordance with year 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation
Global Hand washing Day Global Hand washing Day is a campaign to motivate and mobilize millions around the world to wash their hands with soap. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of hand washing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.
By washing your hand – you are free from Microbes By frequently washing your hands the right way, you’ll wash away germs — such as bacteria and viruses — that you have picked up from other people, through contaminated water and food, from tainted surfaces, or from animals and animal waste.
Hand washing a better option in prevention The two biggest killers of children in the developing world today are diarrheal disease and respiratory tract infections. The simple act of washing hands with soap can cut diarrhea risk by almost half, and respiratory tract infection by a third. This makes hand washing a better option for disease prevention than any single vaccine

Before and after you eat
Before you touch your eyes, nose or mouth
Before and after you prepare food, and after you handle meat or fish,
Before moving on to other food items
After you change a diaper
After you pet a dog, cat or other animal
After you touch plants or soil

After you come in contact with any body fluids or touch items that may have come in contact with body fluids
Global Hand washing day was Observed in IG Medical College Shimla in Collaboration with School Health Programme of National Rural Health Mission Govt of Himachal Pradesh & Department of Community Medicine IG Medical College Shimla.
The function was presided over by the Principal IGMC, Dr K. P. Chaudhary. The winners were felicitated by the Managing Director NRHM, Shri Rakesh Kanwar. Dr Omesh Bharti and Dr Gopal Chauhan from the Directorate of health services were also present on the occasion. Dr Anupam Parashar, Dr D S Dhadwal, Dr Anita Thakur and Dr Narender Mahajan, Faculty members of the department of Community medicine, were also present on the occasion.
Dr Anmol Gupta, Associate Professor Department of Community Medicine made a small presentation on the Hand washing steps and Hands on training was given to the participants of the Workshop. One Video on How to wash hands was shown to the participants More than 300 Students from MBBS/Nursing Students and School students from various schools in Shimla took part in Global Hand washing events. The Department of Community Medicine has been holding similar workshops in different Schools of Shimla City from the past two months.
