Amritsar – Hon’ble Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Parkash Singh Badal formally inaugurated the building of Guru Nanak Dev University College located at Chung of district Tarn Taran. This College is one among others established under the UGC Scheme under which 374 districts has been short listed to open this type of colleges
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ajaib Singh Brar welcomed the Chief Minister and other dignitaries. S. Virsa Singh Valtoha, MLA presented vote of thanks on this occasion. Principal, Mohanjit Kaur Sethi, Registrar Dr. Inderjit Singh, Prof. M.S. Hundal, Dean College Development Council, Dr. Harish Chandar Sharma, Professor Incharge (Public Relations), students, teachers and other local dignitaries were present.
Chief Minister while speaking on this occasion said that during last four and half years about 17 similar colleges have been opened. He said that earlier there were only 50 colleges in the State but now there are 6 other Universities apart from Punjabi University, Patiala and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. He said that approval letters for another three Universities has been released recently.
Sardar Parkash Singh Badal said that to provide quality education to rural girl students, poor and backwards, Punjab government has opened Adarsh Schools. He said that we were backward in education and development is not possible without education. Now to fulfill this gap, we have given equal attention to education along with health and electric power. Due to sincere efforts, Punjab is at third place in education earlier this position was at 14th number.
He also appreciated the personal interest of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ajaib Singh Brar for opening this college. He said that University has appointed good staff to impart quality education to the backward and rural area students of this region. He said that shortly sports stadium, hostel and other buildings would be constructed as required by the University. He said that education provided in our educational institutes needed to be job oriented, so that our students could get appointments immediately after the completion of their degrees.
Earlier, in his welcome address Prof. Brar said that no other State of the country implemented this scheme to start this type of colleges. He said that Punjab Government sanctioned four colleges at village Chung, Narot Jaimal Singh, Mithra and Verka. He said that University had made provision for vocational training in these colleges along with BA level courses. So that student could get appointments after the completion of their degrees.
He said that shortly post-graduate courses would also be started in this college, so that this college would be developed as Nucleolus centre of education in this area.
Principal, Mohanjit Kaur Sethi detailed about the activities and achievement of the college. She also thanked the Chief Minister and University Authority for providing this college as gift to this educationally backward area.
