Dog Show at Vet Varsity

Ludhiana – On the special occasion of World Veterinary Year 2011, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University ( GADVASU)  organized Ist and 2nd  Championship DOG SHOW on 30th October 2011 at Silver Jubilee Complex of College of Veterinary Science. While revealing this information Dr. Kirti Dua Head, Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine shared that a wide range of dogs of different breeds from Punjab and adjoining states participated in this show. The judging was done by the eminent canine judges of national repute. Dr. V.K. Taneja Vice- Chancellor GADVASU inaugurated the dog show. On this occasion he said that dog is a most popular pet as a household animal kept for companionship and a person’s enjoyment so it is duty of Vet. Varsity that we give awareness for the proper care of these loyal pets. A souvenir was also released by Vice-Chancellor.    
  About 200 pet owners registered their dogs for competition. There were seven classifications of breeds for competition. Those were Toy, Terrier, Utility, Hound, Gundog, Working and Pastoral groups.  About 30 breeds participated in the show and prominent among them were Pekingese, German shepherd, Poodle, Pomrarian, Great Dane, Bullmastiff, Neopolitan Mastiff, Sharpei, Chow Chow and rare breed like Canecorso.  For each group different breeds participated and best of breed and reserve best of breed prizes were awarded. Then out of each group three best dogs were given first, second and third out of the group. From all the groups together eight best of show prizes were allocated along with best of show bred in India and best puppy of the show. About 90 prizes were awarded out of which 30 gold medals and 30 silver medals were awarded for best of breed and reserve best of breed respectively.  Trophies were given to Ist , 2nd and 3rd winner of the group.  
In this dog show all the major pharmaceutical companies of the country dealing with the veterinary products exhibited their products.  Besides this there were stalls from the dog groomers and pet food manufactures. Thus this dog show was a very good platform where all the stake holders in the companion animal industry i.e. clinicians, students, pharmaceuticals, pet food manufacturers, dog breeders and pet lovers interacted with each other. In the closing ceremony Dr. H.S. Sandha Director Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Punjab conferred the awards to the winner pet owner. Mr. Harish Rai Dhanda MLA was special guest on the valedictory function. A good number of general spectators along with Dean, Directors, Faculty members, employees and students witnessed the show.
