PROJECT “SHAKTI” LAUNCHED TO EMPOWER GIRLS

(THREE NGOs COLLABORATE TO PROMOTE HEALTH AND EMPOWERMENT)
Chandigarh – Three city NGOs, namely, Society for Support to Voluntary Agencies (SOSVA), Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association (CSCA) and Yuvsatta joined hands today to adopt 100 girls residing in Bapu Dham Colony under “Project SHAKTI”, a programme designed to promote health, hygiene and empowerment of young girls and women.
Under this programme, the girls will be given regular medical checks and provided free sanitary napkins as well as medicines like IFA, calcium, multi vitamin and de-worming tablets, as recommended by the doctors. The plan also envisages forming the girls into teams headed by peer leaders and organizing for them yoga, games and hobby classes like candle making, mehndi application, food preservation etc which could, at some later date, lead to income generation. In addition, assistance will be provided to find for them regular or seasonal jobs.
Speaking on the occasion, SOSVA President BB Mahajan said that this was perhaps the first time that three NGO had come together, without Government funding, to take up such a vast project. He stressed the importance of ensuring safe motherhood for progress of the Country. This, he said, was possible if health care of the girl child started at an early age and ingrained social evils were eradicated.
Others who spoke on the occasion includes Brig. Keshav Chandra, Director, SOSVA (N) & Pramod Sharma, Coordiantor of Yuvsatta.
