Nativity Certificates for NRIs

Jalandhar 01 Dec.2012 :     Mr.  Anurag Verma, Divisional Commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioners of the eight districts of Jalandhar Division to ensure that Tehsildars and Sub Divisional Magistrates do not harass the Non Resident Indians for issuance of Nativity Certificates. Mr. Verma said that these certificates are required by applicants who desire to get themselves registered as Overseas Citizen of India with Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India. In the case one Mrs Savita Raval from Britain, it had come to the notice of the Commissioner that revenue authorities of Jalandhar district are not aware of the latest instructions issued in this regard by Government of India.
    Mr. Verma said that as per the latest instructions issued by Ministry of Overseas India Affairs, the Nativity Certificates are to be issued by an officer not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of the district. Before issuing the Certificate the Deputy Commissioners shall ensure that the applicant satisfies the eligibility criteria specified by Government of India. The Deputy Commissioners have been asked to evolve a suitable mechanism of verification to establish India nativity of Overseas Citizens of India applicants on priority basis.
    Mr. Verma said that the persons registered as Overseas Citizen of India are entitled for grant of multiple entries life-long visa for visiting India for any purpose. They are also exempted from registration with Foreign Regional Registration Officer or Foreign Registration Officer for any length of stay in India. Any person of full age and capacity, who is a citizen of another country, but was a citizen of India at any time of was eligible to be so, may apply for registration.
