Candle light protest by Staff of Colleges

Chandigarh 13.12.11- Work in the seven non-govt. aided colleges of Chandigarh came to a standstill on the directive of the Joint Action Committee, comprising of the associations of the managements, principals, teachers and non-teaching staff of these colleges. The staff began a 72 hour Education Bandh   by going on a stay-in-strike from today.  No house tests were conducted.
They held college dharnas during the day and in the evening took out a Candle Light march in Sector 17 to express their deep resentment against the Punjab Govt. for its discriminatory and arrogant behavior towards them. The teachers are agitating because even after many years of promises, the Punjab government had failed to implement the already notified pension scheme for the college teachers.
Prof. Ghanshyam Dev, President, Chandigarh District Council of the PCCTU said, ‘The Pension and Gratuity Act passed by the Akali-BJP Government in 1999 remains unimplemented. Punjab is the only state not to grant any pension to the employees of the aided colleges. The Akali-BJP Government had even this time promised in its election manifesto that pension will be granted to the college teachers. However, despite repeated assurances they had failed to do so."
Prof. Rupinder Chatha, President of the MCM DAV College Teachers’ Union rued the treatment being meted out to the non-teaching employees of the colleges who perhaps are the only cadre of employees in Punjab and Chandigarh, yet to get the benefit of revised pay-scales from 1.1.2006.
