PAU ORGANISES AWARENESS CAMP AGAINST FEMALE FOETICIDE

LUDHIANA, DECEMBER 20:– An awareness camp against “Female Foeticide” was organized by the Department of Human Development of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for the rural parents of the village Ayali Khurd.
Laying emphasis on the importance of girl child and woman in the family, the departmental Head, Dr Jatinder K. Gulati, urged parents to consider their daughters as an asset rather than liability on the family. She discussed about the menace of infanticide with thrust on the causes and practices prevalent century ago and divulged that the current trend of female foeticide has declined the child sex ratio, particularly, in Punjab.
            Dr Anurag Chaudhary, Prof. and Head, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, made the women aware of the consequences of repetitive abortions, importance of nutrition for girls during their adolescent years and for young mothers during their pregnancy.
            Mrs Harsimrat Kaur and Mr Ajay Arora, Advocates, District Courts, Ludhiana, motivated the women to exercise their decision making power and their right in planning their family size, irrespective of the sex of their existing children. They highlighted the legal rights of the women and laws which protect and safeguard the rights of the women.
            During the camp, an M.Sc student, Miss Rupinder recited a poem of Gurbhajan Gill “Rakhri di tand khatre vich.”
Mrs Kanwar, proposing the vote of thanks, said that such motivation camps will be organized in other villages also. She appreciated the efforts of the staff working under Mr Jeevan Kumar, Child Development Project Officer, in organization of this camp.
