Chandigarh, January 9: PUNBUS has been awarded the Winners’ Trophy and Cash Award for having lowest accident rate amongst all State Transport Undertakings in the country for the Year 2010 – 11. The trophy and the award was received by Mr. Mandeep Singh, Secretary Transport, Punjab today at New Delhi from Mr. A. K. Upadhyay, IAS, President ASRTU & Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways Government of India. PUNBUS was also awarded for being one of the five profit making STUs in the country. Similarly Punjab Roadways bagged the Winners’ Trophy and cash award for lowest accident rate amongst STUs for 2010 – 2011 which was also received by Mr. Mandeep Singh in today’s function.
PUNBUS and Punjab Roadways have the distinction of receiving this award for the second year in succession. The accident rate in PUNBUS for year 2010 – 2011 was 0.0625 for every 1 lakh KMs time operated while it was 0.0436 per lakh KMs for Punjab Roadways. PUNBUS has posted a profit of Rs. 2.03 Crores for the year 2010 – 11.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mandeep Singh informed that PUNBUS was one of the youngest State Transport Undertakings in the country and new buses were being added to the fleet of PUNBUS every year. Presently PUNBUS and Punjab Roadways together have a fleet of 1800 buses. PUNBUS has taken many innovative measures like introduction of Electronic- Ticketing Machines, GPS System and Passenger Information System, Online Reservation System and Advance Reservation System for providing convenience to its passengers. He further said that the reasons for lowest accident rate in the country were the replacement of over-aged fleet with new fleet of buses every year, check on drunken driving and over speeding and intensive training and regular medical check- ups of drivers.
