PUNJAB SET TO CROSS RECORD 167 LAKH TONNE OF WHEAT THIS YEAR: DR. SANDHU

Chandigarh, February 09: The wheat basket of country, Punjab, is set to touch record wheat production of 167 lakh tones this year.
Dr. Mangal Singh Sandhu, Director Agriculture Department, Punjab stating this said that if the weather remains suitable in coming days, the production of wheat could touch 167 lakh tones this year, which would cross the maximum wheat production in the last four decades 164.72 lakh tonne. He said that during the current season 35.15 lakh hectare area was under wheat cultivation while in 2010-11 the area was 35.10 lakh hectares. Dr. Sandhu revealed that this season would also witness an increase in yield to more than 47 quintal per hectare.
Director Agriculture said that the right time of sowing of wheat was in November and rains in mid January was quite beneficial for wheat crop that may increase its yield He said that the yellow rust disease would affect the wheat seeds DBW-17 and DH-711 in Kandi belt of  Ropar, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur districts. He said that the Agriculture Department has started initiatives to tackle the yellow rust disease in such areas suggesting the farmers to ensure tilt, bumper shine spray. He said that the maximum area under wheat cultivation were of HD-2967, PBW-621 and PBW-550 types, which were more resistant to yellow rust disease.
