Striking students refuse to accept food in hospital

CHANDIGARH: February, 18 : The striking Panjab University students Sunny Mehta and Ravinder Singh Rawat, who were evicted to hospital yesterday, have refused break their fast though doctors have put them on glucose because their “blood sugar level had dropped” and they have four to five kg weight.
The police have slapped a charge of attempt to suicide on the student leaders and have posted guard at the hospital to restrain them from moving out.
Sunny Mehta, who is the national delegate of National Students Union of India, said that the police action is a violation of his fundamental right to protest peacefully. He said that the national NSUI leadership is aware of the situation and is sending a representative to Chandigarh.
The two student leaders went on an indefinite hunger strike on Wednesday demanding reduction in prices of food items at the Students Centre and hostel mess charges. Yesterday, the university security staff, with the help of the police, broke up their protest, roughed up the protesters and removed them to the hospital.
