Amritsar, 21 February : Mr. Anurag Verma, Commissioner, Jalandhar Division has directed the Deputy Commissioners of all the eight districts of Jalandhar Division to send Executive Officers of the Municipal Committees in their jurisdiction to Dera Radha Swami, Beas to see the arrangements of sanitation and cleanliness there. Mr. Verma said that the purpose of this exercise is to try to motivate the Executive Officers and to try to emulate the best practices of the Dera.
Mr. Verma informed that impressed by the cleanliness and excellent sanitation services in the Dera, he had sent a team consisting of Executive Officers of the Municipal Committees of Kapurthala, Phillaur and Hoshiarpur to the Dera. The team found that the process of cleaning of streets is started at 2.00 a.m. at midnight so that in the morning, the complex is totally neat and clean. The team found a number of best practices, which could easily be replicated by the Municipal Committees. It was found that the collection of garbage is done at the same time when the streets are being cleaned. In contrast, in most of the Municipal Committees after cleaning of streets, garbage dumps are left as it is and are invariably removed after a gap of few hours. This gives a bad look to the cities.
Mr. Verma said that the team of Executive Officers found that the Dera has set up a sewerage treatment plant in a very economic and environment friendly manner. Since, most of the Municipal Committees are starved of funds, this model can be very useful for them. Mr. Verma has written to Director Local Government to look into the possibility of adopting this model for the Municipal Committees. Similarly, it was found that sewer is cleaned through bucket system in a very efficient and economical manner. It was also found that in solid waste management vermiculture was being used very successfully. Mr Verma has asked that the Executive Officers should also take their Sanitary Inspectors and a couple of Safai Sewaks along to motivate them.
