Rs.150 crore to be spent for upkeep of National Highways in state: Sharanjit Dhillon

9 High level bridges worth 182 crores would become operational by December next year
Construction of 4 lane roads on 4 national highways would be completed by March 2014

Chandigarh,  23 Aug 2012: The Punjab Government has approved a budget of Rs. 150 crore for the purpose of repair and maintenance of National Highways in the state for the current session 2012-13.

Disclosing this here today, PWD Minister Mr. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said that this was decided in a high level meeting, which was held to review the status of ongoing construction works of 4/6 roads in the state. He said that besides issuing directions to the concerned officials to monitor the work properly, it has also been asked to the contractors to complete the constructions within stipulated time frame. 

Mr. Dhillon said that the construction of 4/6 lanes at National Highways including Shambhu-Jalandhar, Pathankot-Amrtisar, Ludhiana-Talwandi Bhai and Bhogpur-Mukerian was on full swing and these highways would become operational by the end of March 2014. He said that the Punjab Government has also directed the contractors and concerned officials of PWD to expedite the work  of under construction 9 high-level bridges-a Rs 182 crore project, including Mattewara bridge on Satluj river between Rahon (Nawan Shahr) and Mattewara, two bridges in Ropar district on Sarhind Canal and Satluj River, Makhu-Ferozepur Bridge over Satluj River, a multi lane high level bridge in Amritsar district, Samana-Gulla Road bridge and Muradpur Bridge in Tarn Taran district. The Minister informed that these bridges would be operational by December 2013.

The Minister also informed that the construction work of 4/6 lanes of Zirakpur-Patiala, Patiala-Bathinda National Highways would start by next month while the construction of 4/6 lanes on Sri Amritsar-Sri Ganga Nagar and Jalandhar-Jind National Highways would start by October next year. He said that the duo projects would be completed by October 2016

Reiterating the commitment of SAD-BJP Government for the constant development of basic infrastructure in the state, Mr. Dhillon said that the continuity of converting the busy roads into 4/6 lanes, construction of ROB/RUB and High Level Bridges would remain in process. He said that the SAD-BJP Government had spent Rs. 350 crores to make 4/6 lane on a total 405 Km roads in the state besides construction of 25 ROB/RUBs.
