International Mother language day celebrated

Chandigarh 21 Feb.(Bharatsandesh news):Centre for Sikh Studies and the Department of Punjabi of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh organized a seminar on the occasion of International Mother language Day. Renowned linguist professor Joga Singh from Punjabi University Patiala delivered a lecture on the theme of ‘International Linguistic Scenario and Punjabi Language’ while telling about the significance and history of the day, he said that in modern technological and commercial world being uni-lingual is a ‘linguistic handicap’; one should know atleast two languages. He also informed that as compared to English, other languages like Chinese are rising on the world linguistic scene. He emphasized on ‘mother-language’ being the medium of instruction. The function was presided over by the noted scholar and writer Surjit Hans who pleaded for making Punjabi language more capable to suit the needs of academic and international speakers. Col (Retd.) J.S. Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society, also extended his supportive views to the cause of Punjabi Language. Earlier Principal H.S.Sohi welcomes the deligates. Dr Jaswinder Singh, coordinator of the seminar, conducted the proceedings in a well organisaed way. Dr Devinder Singh, Prof.Kulbir Singh, Dr Jaswinder Kaur, Dr Jagdeep Singh Dr Hanspreet Kaur, Prof.Sukhmeen Kaur were also present on the occasion and discussed various issues on the subject.
