New York,: New York and its Tri-state area ,Sikhs and Punjabis observed the 74th martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh, one of the most renowned revolutionaries for India’s independence who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in 13 March 1940 who was responsible for the Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre of Amritsar held on 13 April1919.
Jaswant Singh ‘Jassa President, Shaheed Udham Singh Sabha New York demanded suitable Shaheed Udham Singh museum in Jallianwalla Bagh so that tourists can know how Udham Singh assassinated Michael O’Dwyer on 13 March 1940 in London.
The Society observed the day by holding three day nonstop continuous recitation (Akhand Path) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at the Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Cultural Society, Richmond Hill NY. After the ceremonial completion of religious prayers, a commemorative function was held for remembering the life and struggles of Shaheed Udham Singh. On the occasion rich tributes were paid to Shaheed Udham Singh by speakers like Dr. Charanjit Singh Gumtala , Swinder Singh Josan Dr Satnam Singh Dhami ,Jaswant Singh Jassa. Historic heroic deeds and actions were described and sung through ballads by Dhadi Jatha of Bibi Jasdeep Kaur known as Baddowal Walian Bibian who kept the audience spellbound. Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala was honored for his contribution to Punjabi literature and for his writings on freedom fighters. Volunteers group of Punjabi immigrants originally from Sunam, the birth place of Shaheed Udham Singh, very well served free community kitchen (Guru ka Langar) for the three days.. The group included the special services of Bahadar Singh, Amandeep and Maninder Singh. The function concluded with thanks from Jaswant Singh ‘Jassa President, Shaheed Udham Singh Sabha, to all members and volunteers of the society who served the occasion with the spirit of devotion and dedication.
