Three personalities decorated with Punjab Government State Award are associated with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University. Dairy farmer has a herd of 150 cattle. Based at Rode village this graduate dairy farmer produced 1600 Ltr milk daily. Using modern technology like bulk milk chiller and milking parlour the leading farmer has also visited USA, Italy and Israel to learn the new techniques in dairy farming. His herd in decorated with 450 awards in different livestock competitions. PAU also awarded him best dairy farmer in 2002. He is using green fodder and silage alongwith self-produced feed for balanced nutritive values. One of his cows has produced 58 litre milk.
The second personality is Sh. Jyoti Saroop. He is manager of The UNATI Co-operative Marketing – Cum-Processing Ltd. It was established in the year 2003 by a group of 14 young, dynamic and innovative persons with a vision of integrating rural community of Kandi Area for sustainable livelihood and development from natural bio-resources and novel rainfed agriculture with cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants.
UNATI started initially with a vision to explore the opportunity in processing and marketing of natural herbal bioresoures of Kandi area like Amla, Giloye, Harar, Bahera, Karela, Shivlingi, etc. The society has integrated around 300 families in Kandi area for collection of bioresources which are in turn procured by the society at pre-fixed prices, much above the market price as an incentive for assured supply of raw materials. The Society generated an income of about Rs.1.15 crore for the local community in 2012-13 by providing them with gainful employment.
This society is consortium partner in GADVASU’s National Agricultural innovation Project (NAIP) entitled “Sustainable Livestock Based Farming System for Livelihood Security” in Hoshiarpur District of Punjab”. This project is working on more than 3000 families.
The third award conferred on to Smt. Veena Sharma. Smt. Sharma is president of Sada Shiv Modern Self-Help Group (SSM SHG) which was formed in the year 2003 with 36 village women with the primary objective of providing gainful employment to women. This SHG is also associated with NAIP.
The group started with making washing powder – which was sold through small Karyana shops in the surrounding villages. From the year 2006 SHG turned its focus towards making pickles and murabbas of the high-grade fruits and vegetables that are locally available in abundance but were not ever processed and marketed before.
To source the raw materials, the group members began directly tying up with the farmers, who were no longer required to depend upon middlemen to sell their produce. On the marketing front, SSM SHG began going to the Kisan Melas organized at various places in the state, where they got excellent response and were able to sell products over Rs. 10,000/- per day at times.
SSM SHG has won several honours and prizes in its journey so far.
Dr. V.K. Taneja VC GADVASU congratulated these award winners. He said that award to these personalities is a recognition of livestock professions. It showed that value addition and contribution to masses can reap good dividend and positive results.
