PAU TO HOLD CROP PRODUCE COMPETITION DURING KISAN MELA

            The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will hold a crop produce competition on first day of PAU Kisan Mela.

 

Giving details, Dr SPS Brar, Convener of produce competition, said that among vegetables, competition in recommended varieties of bhindi (okra), karela (bitter gourd), chillies, ram tori, brinjal, radish, ghiya kaddu (long and round)/halwa kaddu, cowpea or any other vegetable will be held. Besides,  competition in the recommended varieties of fruits such as  guava, lime and lemon, malta/grape fruit, papaya or any other seasonal fruit will be organized. In addition, competition in cut rose/loose rose, marigold, tuberose (rajni gandha) or any other flower will be held, he said. The mela will also see competition in field crops including maize cobs/baby corn, sugarcane, cotton or any other crop, he added.

 

Further, Dr Brar said that the sample size of bhindi (okra), karela (bitter gourd), chillies, ram tori and radish should be half-a kg whereas of brinjal and cowpea or any other vegetable, it should be half kg or 3 pieces. The sample size of ghiya kaddu (long and round)/halwa kaddu should be 3 pieces. Among fruits, half kg of guava, lime and lemon; 3 pieces of malta/grape fruit, papaya or any other seasonal fruit are the requirements, he added. The size of cut rose/loose rose and tuberose should five stems/spikes/250 gms whereas that of  marigold, it should be five stems/spikes. Elaborating, he told that the sample size of maize cobs/baby corn should be five cobs, whereas that of sugarcane, it should be 3 or 4 mature canes. The size of cotton should be 1or 2 mature plants with bolls while that of any other crop, it should be 2 or3 mature plants.

 

Dr Brar informed that the entries for the competition will be entertained up to 11.30 a.m. on September 25 at the produce competition stall, near PAU Kairon Kisan Ghar. No entry will be entertained after the specified time, he said.

 

The series of Kisan Melas/Divas will begin with Kisan Divas at Nagkalan Jahangir (Amritsar), Faridkot and Ballowal Saunkhri on September 15. This will be followed by the Kisan Melas at Rauni (Patiala) and Bathinda on September 18 and 22, respectively. Kisan Mela on PAU campus, Ludhiana will be organized on September 25 and 26 whereas the last Kisan Mela will be held at Gurdaspur on September 30.
