Amritsar, 17 Feb 2016 (Bharat Sandesh News):– The historic Rambagh gate is the only surviving gate of the walled city constructed during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It was constructed on the then route to Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) from the Maharaja’s summer capital viz. Ram Bagh also known as Company Bagh. In fact the shrine used to be visible from his royal residence. The Maharaja spent a huge sum on the fortification of the city.
In a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Parkash Singh Badal, Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, Patron Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded that this gate should be declared as heritage site just like historic Ram Bagh, Amritsar so that it could be maintained properly. The Manch leader also also demanded eviction of all encroachments from this gate since, according to him, these encroachments have become an obstacle and an eyesore for heritage lovers.
